Engaging the Community in Promoting Sustainable Living

It is Thanksgiving Day morning and I recently left the Tallahassee Turkey Trot after Sustainable Tallahassee’s volunteers promoted recycling and composting to over 5,000 runners and walkers. Volunteers were stationed through the registration and finish line area educating the participants on the proper disposal of compostable and recyclable items. Over eight produce boxes of compost material were collected.
Participation at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot is part of a conscious effort by Sustainable Tallahassee to educate the Tallahassee and Leon County community about the benefits sustainable living. Soon after becoming Executive Director of Sustainable Tallahassee approximately four years ago, I realized that Sustainable Tallahassee was doing a good job of “preaching to the choir”, but if it wanted to make a difference in our community Sustainable Tallahassee needed to expand its message out to local residents.
